B.5 System-Wide Safety Project (SWS)

Amendment 6 to the NASA ARMD Research Opportunities in Aeronautics (ROA) 2019 NRA has been posted on the NSPIRES site.

NASA’s System-Wide Safety (SWS) project has two primary goals.

The first is to study and understand how safety can be affected by the growing complexity of

advanced aviation systems designed to improve the efficiency of flight, and the increasing number and type of aircraft – piloted and otherwise – available to an ever-growing number and type of customers.

The second is to develop and demonstrate the research tools, innovative technologies and operational methods that will proactively mitigate those potential risks in order to maintain the aviation industry’s unparalleled safety record.

SWS activities are designed to enable a system that provides expanded safety awareness, increased access to relevant data, integrated analysis capabilities, improved real-time detection and alerting of hazards, full decision support, and automated safety mitigation strategies where appropriate.

The object of this solicitation is to seek proposals in three subtopic areas that complement and build upon NASA’s internal research, and also related developments by others in industry, government, and academia.

These subtopics include a demonstration of an integrated domain-specific, In-time Aviation Safety Management System (IASMS), the development of novel and predictive on-line and automated analytics-based risk assessment tools, and also the development of trusted contingency management methods. This NRA invites proposers to submit their proposals by September 21, 2020 5:00 PM EST.
