For more than 20 years, NCDC has operated as the Georgian national public health institute responsible for essential public health functions and the management of public health resources.

The institute was originally established in 1937 as a Plague Station and then was transformed into the Scientific-Practical Center of Especially Dangerous Pathogens in 1992.

NCDC’s mission is to protect and improve the health of the Georgian population through scientific-evidence-based prevention, preparedness and timely response to public health threats.

NCDC’s primary mandate is the prevention and early detection of disease and serves as the leading institution for the prevention and control of the communicable and non-communicable diseases.

NCDC is the Georgian National Focal Point for the International Health Regulations (IHR) and is able to communicate with the World Health Organization (WHO) contact point and national stakeholders 24/7.

In addition, NCDC is a key Global Health Security Agenda partner as the responsible agency for support of Georgia’s role as the lead country for the Real-time Surveillance Action Package.

NCDC practices advanced laboratory testing and epidemiological methods to carry out evidence-based work related to addressing public health threats and the respective contingency planning, effective and timely prevention and monitoring of the disease, as well as reduction of harm due to environmental hazards and risky behavior.
