National Sheriffs Institute

New sheriffs come to the office or are elected to the office in a variety of ways.

Some succeed a retiring sheriff.

Others come from outside the agency with different ideas for changes in the current methods of operation that appeal to their community.

Few of these new

credit:


sheriffs have experience as a chief executive officer (CEO).

Even fewer have experience with the full responsibilities of operating a local correctional facility.

The awardee of this cooperative agreement will be working closely with the National Institute of Corrections to continue offering the only courses of instruction specifically developed to enhance the skills for these elected officials to better serve their communities.

Additional Information of Eligibility:
NIC invites applications from nonprofit organizations (including faith-based, community, and tribal organizations), for-profit organizations (including tribal for-profit organizations), and institutions of higher education (including tribal institutions of higher education).

Recipients, including for-profit organizations, must agree to waive any profit or fee for services.

NIC welcomes applications that involve two (2) or more entities; however, one (1) eligible entity must be the applicant and the others must be proposed as sub-recipients.

The applicant must be the entity with primary responsibility for administering the funding and managing the entire program.
